One business which believed it to be recession proof is the live gambling business. We don't know why the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was promulgated. We do know that most of the major land gambling businesses had concerns that top online gambling sites would cannibalize their existing business. This has proven to be untrue where online gambling is legal, and it is very legal in the UK. So, top online gambling sites in the UK have not diverted business from the normal gambling industry, or so it appears.
What we see today is many top online gambling sites for the UK and European facing audience. Australians are also allowed to gamble online, although there is no legal framework for actual gambling business online in this country. Many Canadians gamble online and there is a growing marketplace in Asian countries, while new Zealanders enjoy a flutter too. However in the US, the Department of Justice recently closed down the biggest online poker forum sites in the land. These were top online gambling sites which believed they had a legal right to operate in this country, obviously the opposite was true.
The forward thinking countries which now allow a legalized framework for online gambling activities, also see their online gambling industry as a valuable catchment area on a global level. These activities provide employment opportunities for highly technically trained staff as well as tax and licensing revenue in various offshore jurisdictions. In other words the industry is seen as an additional revenue stream.
Harrah's in the United States always saw the bigger picture in terms of online gambling and its possibilities to create income; but were heavily outvoted by Wynn and many of the tribal controlled live gambling areas. Now every gambling concern in the US is wearing the same hair-shirt and starting from scratch as far as the legalization of online gambling. No doubt in the future, me may see some top online gambling sites come out of this country, but they will be way behind the UK and Europe. In fact the UK leads the way in what has become a mainstream industry sector.
